SAN FRANCISCO, May 9, 2023 /Christian Newswire/ -- What is a Church Council? Who can call a Church Council? Why do Church Councils matter today? What's the difference between a council and a synod? All of these questions and many, many others regarding Church Councils are answered in the new book CHURCH COUNCILS: 100 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS (Ignatius Press), by Paul Senz.
CHURCH COUNCILS is more than a history of the twenty-one ecumenical councils; this question-and-answer book provides a practical and theological explanation of them, including the historical context that led to each council, the reasons it was convened, the major events that happened during the council, and the impact of its teachings, then and now.
Senz earned a Master of Arts in pastoral ministry from the University of Portland. His writings have appeared in many publications, including Catholic World Report, National Catholic Register, Adoremus, Our Sunday Visitor, and Catholic Answers. He is the author of Fatima: 100 Questions and Answers about the Marian Apparitions.
While surveying some of the most important issues and controversies in the history of the Church, Senz explains that CHURCH COUNCILS is really about the teaching authority of the bishops as successors to the apostles, particularly when teaching together as a single, united body, in union with the pope.
The Church holding councils is nothing new. The first Apostles held what is commonly called the "Council of Jerusalem," as detailed in the Acts of the Apostles, but the meaning and history of each one has not been easily combined into one easy-to-read book until CHURCH COUNCILS.
"We cannot begin to understand ourselves or our current crisis unless we understand the councils -- what they are, what they said, and how they said it," said Scott Hahn, professor of theology at Franciscan University and author of Rome Sweet Home. "We are the children of Vatican II, as we are the children of Trent and Chalcedon. Paul Senz guides us through the history of the councils -- and helps us to see their divine sense and providential purpose."
