WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- The National Pro-Life Action Center (NPLAC)—the uncompromising voice of pro-life America on Capitol Hill—has issued the following response to President Bush’s statements in support of Andrew von Eschenbach’s decision to reconsider granting the abortifacient drug Plan B over-the-counter (OTC) status.
Stephen G. Peroutka, Esq., NPLAC chairman, stated:
“President Bush’s implied support of OTC status for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is a betrayal of the pro-life principles he claims to support. If this dangerous drug is made available over-the-counter, it will give adult male predators another weapon in their arsenal against young women.
“I agree wholeheartedly with Mark Crutcher, president of Life Dynamics, Inc., when he states: ‘Granting Plan B over-the-counter status will usher in a golden age for those who seek to sexually exploit young girls. If sales of Plan B were tracked for the first five years of OTC sales, I guarantee that the #1 purchaser will be adult men. The pro-choice agenda is now becoming a get-out-of-jail-free card for men who prey upon underage children for sex.’”
Kimberly Zenarolla, MTS, NPLAC executive vice president, stated:
“Research shows and even the manufacturers of Plan B admit that one of the ways that so-called ‘emergency contraception’ may work is by preventing a newly conceived human baby from implanting in the womb. This is a chemical abortion. We are dismayed by the president’s apparent disregard for the countless innocent lives that will be lost if this drug is granted over-the-counter status.
“While the president rightly appears to be concerned with protecting human embryos from destructive embryonic stem cell research, here he is not maintaining the pro-life position. By giving his tacit approval of OTC status for Plan B, President Bush is advocating for the destruction of innocent human life, while exposing women and young girls to untold health risks and abuse.
“We renew our call to the president to withdraw his nomination of von Eschenbach and reject his plan to make this dangerous drug more easily available.”
