Catholic Leader Calls on President Bush to Withdraw Nomination of Dr. von Eschenbach to Head FDA

FRONT ROYAL, Va., Aug. 10 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, President of Human Life International (HLI), responds to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) move to make the abortion-causing drug Plan B available over-the-counter (OTC).

“Barr Pharmaceutical’s Plan B is an abortion-causing drug that contains high doses of a powerful hormone.  Low doses of this hormone when used for ‘contraception’ are only available with a prescription.  It makes no sense for Dr. von Eschenbach to allow the higher dose abortion causing Plan B to be available without a prescription.

“Dr. von Eschenbach’s ignorance of human development, reckless disregard for the safety of young women, and his ready willingness to make important decisions that impact the health and safety of millions of Americans based on political expediency disqualifies him for service as commissioner of the FDA …”

“Dr. von Eschenbach’s nomination should be withdrawn and a health care professional who respects the dignity of the human person, puts the health of the American people first and does not bow to powerful drug companies should be swiftly nominated in his place,” concluded the Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer.
